Introducing twingeling.com – social coupon dashboard

July 21st, 2010 by Dennis Hettema No comments »

twingeling logoAfter a long bout in the hospital with some seriously annoying bacteria munching away on my insides I’m happy to say: “I’m still alive!”. No idea if you are happy to hear this but that’s up to you.

So it is with pleasure that I can now announce that we are launching Twingeling.com, our social couponing dashboard.

The site is pretty simple, it’s an aggregated view of all the social couponing sites in your city. No need to surf around to see if a deal is relevant for you, we’ve got them all in one place. Naturally we offer a daily email digest as well.

Currently the site will be in perpetual “almost done” mode as we are adding new social couponing sites every day. We are expanding our geographical reach with about one to two different countries every week.

If you like the site, please spread the word and if you have any feedback or questions, please let me know in the comments!

Trends for Google owned websites

June 18th, 2010 by Dennis Hettema No comments »

Whilst playing around with Google Trends for websites I thought I’d try sites like google.com & gmail.com to see what’s happening there. Interestingly enough I couldn’t find one single Google property that worked with their trends product. Now why would such an open company hide its own data from its own products?

Competitor sites such as yahoo.com, bing.com and facebook.com are fully covered and according to trends they’re all on the decline.

After Google’s rebuzz button

April 20th, 2010 by Dennis Hettema 4 comments »

image via http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.comI must admit, I was rather grumpy when I heard the news of Google’s own rebuzz button. We had been in contact with Google and asked for a heads up but apparently that’s not the way Google rolls. OK, I’m still a little cranky.

Before Google’s news we were adding about 50.000 stories per day which now has dropped to around 20.000. In the mean time Google’s massive buttons are appearing everywhere but their counts still far lower than the numbers on tweetmeme, Facebook and digg buttons.

So when life gives you lemons you make pancakes. With these low Google Rebuzz counts it seems to me that something must be missing. Whether it is just Google’s Buzz service itself or their implementation of the rebuzz button, we have decided to continue tinkering with buzrr and introduce enhancements along the way. It will be up to you whether you think we add enough to the service to choose our button over Google’s monstrosity (ok, no more grumpy comments to Google, that was the last one).

All in all, I’m thinking the life of buzrr is not that bad. Looking at all those awesome Twitter developers (like tweetmeme.com) that are now being shafted by their “plumbing company”.

p.s.
Needless to say we use Google’s official rebuzz method so our differences won’t be in count but in added functionality and benefits (such as the linklove we pass back).

p.s.2
It looks like tomorrow we will celebrate the indexation of our millionth story on buzrr, mental champagne to all!

Busy busy busy

April 8th, 2010 by Dennis Hettema No comments »

Just a quick update, stories are being added to buzrr at a massive pace.

In the last two days we have gone from approximately 150k indexed stories to nearly 400k at the time of this writing.

Pretty awesome stuff we think but it does mean that the buzrr.com website is rather sluggish at the moment. Our buttons are still being served at lightning speed so blogs using our buttons are not effected.

We are working hard to improve the load time of our webpage, please enjoy the announcement of iPhone 4 while we work to speed things up again.

UPDATE: We have moved our database and have reintroduced some zoom into the website, the buttons are still loading at <200ms and will continue to do so. Now we can get back to work on the new buzrr which is coming very soon.

A small but significant buzrr.com update

Until we have one of these the current update will have to do

Until we have one of these the current update will have to do

From the very beginning it became clear to us that Google Buzz serves  a very international audience. Our first indexed stories were in English but they were quickly followed by Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Thai and so on and so forth.

Yesterday we decided to do one more small update before releasing our big, shiny and new v. 2.0  (yep, it’s coming soon).

With more than 100k stories indexed and new language posts rolling in all the time our index was starting to look like polyglot heaven. Considering most of us do not master three languages or more we decided to introduce language filtering.

This nifty little feature allows you to automagically (machine) translate all buzz posts to English or only show Buzz in a specific language.

The list of languages that we provide is generated automatically so if your language is not listed yet it simply means we do not have enough content (in that language) to show you anything interesting.

We hope you enjoy this new feature of buzrr.com, if you have any feedback please don’t be shy and tell us all about it.

Official Buzrr.com Wordpress plugin launched

buzrr.com wordpress plugin

A quick shot of the admin panel

A little earlier than expected I am proud to announce our official buzrr.com Wordpress plugin.

It has been developed by the same guy who released the unofficial plugin, he turned out to be a friend of mine (small world). Considering we have our hands full with pushing performance updates, improving our trending algorithms and battling spam, we certainly welcomed Mats’s helping hand. He has agreed to continue the development of our plugin in the future as well, thank you Mats!

This plugin allows you to add the Buzrr.com re-buzz button (tongue twister?) to your categories, pages, posts and RSS feeds. You can decide the placement of the re-buzz button and even add some CSS to the mix.

We (Mats) will be adding a bunch of new features in the future, if you have any requests please let us know.

Introducing Buzrr.com – a Google Buzz meme tool

February 25th, 2010 by Dennis Hettema 2 comments »

The first every screenshot of buzrr.com

Together with my friends Alias Eldhose and Yasir Haleem we have created a simple Google Buzz counter (a meme application if you like) called buzrr.com.

The site currently provides you with code for a re-buzz button and it gathers all the re-buzz action in one central place. It’s just like tweetmeme with a different source for identifying the memes.

Today’s version is still pretty bare bones. We are adding a Wordpress plugin in the coming couple of days and other blog plugins will follow soon.

We are also scratching our heads on how we can introduce categories in the best possible way.  Currently this will be hard to do because we are jumping through a bunch of hoops just to make the service work as it does today. Nevertheless we are brainstorming this and if you have any ideas we would love to hear them!

Naturally statistics will take a central role in the future of buzrr. We will roll out updates continuously and as soon as Buzz supports OAUTH we will probably go into overdrive.

Mindspace SEO script about to be launched

iPad applications mindspace

No clear dominator yet in the iPad mindspace

Over the last couple of months I have been working together with Garrett French of Ontolo to create a Search Engine Optimisation script that I absolutely love. It does a lot of things but the main thing it does really well is quickly tell you who the strongest players are in a certain “keyword space” (or “keyword mindspace” as we like to call it).

The script runs search queries on all the keywords you define in one mindspace; For example all the ways that you can describe “ipad applications”. The result will show you how often certain domains or pages were mentioned in the top 3, top 10, top 20 or top 100 on the Search Enginge Result Page (SERP).

A quick keyword mindspace for iPhone applications

It looks like time.com dominates the "iPhone application mindspace"

As the screenshot above shows, the iPad applications keyword mindspace is still pretty open with only marketwatch.com being mentioned twice. In other words there should be opportunity here as there is no 10.000 pound gorilla yet.

Additionally you can keep track of interesting domains and show you how they move on the Search Engine Result Pages over time. Or you could use advanced operators to do really specific searches and find link building opportunities.

All in all I think it’s a pretty cool script and because of that I decided to open source it. As soon as we launch you can download it and play with it according to its GNU GPL license.

If you would rather try before you get for free then you can have a go at our demo script. This script puts quite a load on the search engines so it has been heavily load limited. When you install the script on one of your own servers you can speed up the performance significantly. However please make sure you don’t hammer the search engines, they don’t like that.

If all goes well we should be live this week! If you have any questions please let me know.

What a SJ (Swedish Rail) first class seat really looks like

February 5th, 2010 by Dennis Hettema No comments »

Over the last couple of weeks SJ has been dropping the ball. Delays are the norm, miscommunication is openly admitted by the staff, trains are cancelled without apparent reason so in short it is a mess.

As a daily commuter I decided to upgrade myself to first class so I can sit for the 30 minute it takes to and from work. Some people go partying every weekend and I choose to skip one or two weekends for this luxury. Lately though I pay extra money for the privilege of standing in first class.

This standing room only trend had been going on for a couple of days when I finally managed to get a seat again. Check out the quality of this 1st class (toilet) seat!

How to make your habits stick – a simple tool

February 1st, 2010 by Dennis Hettema No comments »
Seinfeld chain

My Seinfeld chain for not consuming sugar

I’m going to take a wild guess here: At one point in your life you have jumped up and said to yourself: “from now on I’m going to do … forever!” Am I right?

Chances are something like this happened right after you stepped off of the scales or maybe when you extinguished a cigarette. At this point in time you are convinced and filled with a desire to make this change! Sadly that strong desire fades over time. Getting a habit to stick is not easy and quickly you realize it takes commitment, honesty and hard work.

There is no simple way to make a habit stick. You need commitment to drag you through your moments of doubt and weakness. You need honesty in order to confront yourself when you are cheating or are trying to cheat. Last but not least the hard work is a bit of no-brainer, how else are you going to commit, stay at it and be honest?

The task might seem daunting but if you have decided, and you are truly committed, then how are you going to make that fucking habit stick? (Sorry for the F word but it does help to get angry to get your motivation going. Please do get angry and do swear, it helps, really!)

One of the tips I used as a personal trainer was that your first target should be to live up to the habit consistently for 45 days. The theory is that if you keep at something consistently for 45 days it will stick. I have seen this theory turned into practice several times so I’m a believer. 45 days is all you need to (initially) aim for.

The huge caveat here is that it is very difficult to stay committed to something for 45 days and stay honest in the process. This is where my new favorite buddy comes into play: Lou Franco’s iPhone app – Habits. I covered it a little less then a month ago and not a day goes by without me checking the app.

My favorite function is the Seinfeld chaining. A Seinfeld chain is a very simple way to keep your honesty in check. All it does is create a tick box or other symbol in a calendar. If you keep up with your habit the chain gets longer, the longer the chain gets the more painful it is to break it.

So here is my tip to help you make your habits stick:

Install habits for iPhone and check the app every day.

You will be reminded of what you are trying to do every day which might just be enough to kick your butt into gear! Don’t forget to keep a constant check on your Seinfeld chains and ask yourself who you would be fooling if you say you have done something whilst you haven’t.

Turn this ridiculously simple thing into a habit and I think you are well on your way to achieve the tougher habits you aspire. That’s it, start small and work your way up. I hope it helps and please let me know any feedback you might have in the comments.
